Olivia Hines is a fourth-year undergraduate student studying journalism and English at the University of Minnesota. She started her career at the Minnesota Daily, the U of M’s campus daily newspaper, as a reporter for the campus administration desk before becoming the desk’s editor a year later in May 2023. In her role she covered campus protests, Board of Regents policies and decisions, academic freedom and faculty governance. In August 2024, she joined The Reporters’ Inc., a nonprofit news organization and independent documentary production house, as an associate producer and research assistant. There she is working on a documentary project on overturned wrongful convictions for defendants accused of Shaken Baby Syndrome. She is researching the legal ramifications of inaccurate and disputed medical evidence used in these cases. She started working as a public safety intern at the Star Tribune in January 2025. For her honors thesis, she collected and analyzed citizen journalist crime stories to understand to what extent these key actors in news following existing news writing guidelines. She has experience as a multimedia and data journalist. She is expected to graduate May 2025 with honors. Outside of work, Olivia loves spending time with her husband, Jay, and her puppy, Calo.
